What’s in a name? Plenty, if you are Jimi Hendrix’s relatives.
A vodka bearing the image and name of the late great guitarist Jimi Hendrix - and aptly named Hendrix Electric - has divided the Hendrix household.
In Camp One is Janie Hendrix, the adopted stepdaughter of Jimi’s father Ali. Janie is suing a company called Electric Hendrix LLC for trademark infringement, false advertising, and other unlawful acts, as the Seattle Times reports, over the spirit.
Hendrix, of course, died at the age of 27 in 1970, amid strange circumstances. He reportedly choked on his own vomit after drug and alcohol use. Janie alleges that considering how Jimi died, marketing a vodka brand using his name is crude and a ’sick joke.’
Camp Two includes Jimi’s biological brother, Leon, who is part owner of Electric Hendrix.
The feud between Leon and Janie Hendrix is nothing new. The founder of Electric Hendrix funded Leon’s legal battle to wrest control of Jimi’s estimated $80 million estate away from Janie. After Jimi’s death, his father had given Janie control over Jimi’s estate, and left Leon and other relatives out in the cold.
